What should you bring to a gender reveal party? Are gifts necessary?
We get this question a lot: Your friend’s pregnant and you just received an invitation to a gender reveal party at her house. Are you supposed to bring a gift? And if so, should it be something for the baby? You’re stumped! No worries, we’re here to help.
Gender reveal parties are definitely more of a recent trend. Our mothers and grandmothers certainly didn’t host such occasions when they were expecting! So traditionally, there’s no strong etiquette rule that says you should bring a gift to a couple’s gender reveal party. And really, if you’re invited to a gender reveal party, chances are you’ll be invited to Mama’s baby shower as well, and that’s definitely a gift giving occasion. So our final verdict on whether to bring a gift to a gender reveal party? We say skip it! Save your mom & baby gift for her baby shower and/or send along a care package once she delivers her baby and is in major need of care and support.
But wait! We don’t suggest that you show up to the gender reveal party empty handed, necessarily. Instead, we’d treat the gender reveal party invitation as if it was an invitation to a dinner party, in which case we’d first ask the host or hostess if there’s anything we could bring to contribute to the refreshments (ex: an appetizer, a dessert, a salad, etc.). If they seem to have the menu under control and ask you not to bring anything (ex: “just bring yourself!”), then we’d go the traditional route of bringing a housewarming gift, like a bottle of wine (or non-alcoholic sparkling cider for Mama), a clean burning candle and apothecary match set or another thoughtful home item, or a beautiful bouquet of flowers (already assembled in a vase so Mom doesn’t have to scramble for one as soon as you arrive). Then you can rest assured that you’re ticking all the boxes and being a thoughtful, considerate guest…who is ready to join in ALL the baby news celebrations.
